Global Campaign Asks Credit Card Companies To Stop Porn Websites

Bitcoin News

A global campaign is asking credit card companies to stop payments to porn sites, a move which could mean these porn sites would likely adopt cryptocurrency as an alternative means of payment.

According to a special report by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), a group of international campaign groups has spoken to 10 leading credit card companies, asking them to suspend all payments to pornographic sites.

Should this campaign gain much success, it means users and the sites in question would have to rely on Bitcoin and other cryptos in desperate search of other means of payment.

Pornhub: Not All Porn Is Bad

In a written letter to credit card companies, the campaigners from various parts of the globe mentioned that porn websites celebrate racism, advertise incest, and promote sexual violence. The campaigners also mentioned that it is impossible to “judge or verify consent in any videos on their site, let alone live webcam videos.”

According to the letter, “this inherently makes pornography websites a target for sex traffickers, child abusers, and others sharing predatory nonconsensual videos.”

The actions of the campaigners were quickly rebuked by major porn websites, including the PornHub. The website said that it has;

“A steadfast commitment to eradicating and fighting any and all illegal content, including nonconsensual and under-age material. Any suggestion otherwise is categorically and factually inaccurate.”

The site also mentioned that the organizations behind the campaign, “attempt to police people’s sexual orientation and activity – [and] are not only factually wrong but also intentionally misleading.”

Cryptocurrency Might Be The Answer

Some credit card companies are already responding to the campaign. Mastercard said it is investigating, and they would terminate any affiliation to any porn website if they confirm any illegal activity by any cardholder.

American Express has not been friendly, with most porn sites in the past. However, in recent times they’ve been testing a pilot program with a firm that created a platform where certain porn sites could receive payments. The campaigners also sent a letter to American Express.

Last year, PayPal blocked payments to more than 100,000 PornHub models. This made them find other alternatives to receive payments.

In response, models are using Verge (XVG) as an alternative means of payment. The 79th-ranked cryptocurrency by market capitalization has seen a growth in popularity. Cryptocurrency offers an efficient alternative to porn users despite the harsh restrictions placed by mainstream payment providers.
